Effect of Infection with Shistosoma mansoni on Some Biological Parameters in Biomphalaria alexandrina Snails

چکیده
Histological alterations in digestive gland as well as hematological and biochemical changes in haemolymph of Shistosoma mansoni infected Biomphalaria alexandrina snails were studied. The results showed great histological damages in tissues of the digestive gland of infected snails with large numbers of sporocysts and cercariae at several stages of development encircled by cycts in tissue of digestive gland. A detailed light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) of the haemocytes in infected snails were described to evaluate the capability to respond to parasitic infections. Three main haemocytes categories could be distinguished namely: hyalinocytes, agranulocytes and granulocytes according to the presence or absence of granules. Phagocytic ability and pseudopodial formation were obviouisly increased in infected snails. The results showed a significant decrease in total protein and albumin content with elevation of total lipids content and glucose concentration in the haemolymph of infected snails. It was concluded that haemocytes (SEM) in infected snails have large cells with a large imagination, smooth surface and secretion particles adherent to these cells to respond to parasitic infections.

Profenophos is an organophosphorus pesticide which are used effectively against cotton insects and mites. The present work was carried out to evaluate the molluscicidal activity of pesticides (Profenophos) against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails. Also, the effect of sublethal concentrations of pesticide on the infection of B. alexandrina with Schistosoma mansoni and some enzymes of energy metabo...
متن کاملGenetic Variation between Biomphalaria alexandrina Snails Susceptible and Resistant to Schistosoma mansoni Infection
Much effort has been made to control schistosomiasis infection in Egypt. However, enduring effects from such strategies have not yet been achieved. In this study, we sought to determine the genetic variability related to the interaction between Biomphalaria alexandrina snails and Schistosoma mansoni. Using RAPD-PCR with eight (10 mers) random primers, we were able to determine the polymorphic m...

In the present study, Biomphalaria snails collected from five Egyptian governorates (Giza, Fayoum, Kafr El-Sheikh, Ismailia and Damietta), as well as reference control Biomphalaria alexandrina snails from the Schistosome Biological Supply Center (SBSC) (Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, Egypt), were subjected to species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays to identify the collected...
متن کاملInterspecific variations of Biomphalaria alexandrina and Biomphalaria glabrata snails in the presence and absence of Schistosoma mansoni by using of protein profiles
Schistosomiasis, the most important parasitic disease in Egypt, has plagued its people since ancient times. Two species of Biomphalaria are reported from Egypt, the indigenous Biomphalaria alexandrina and Biomphalaria glabrata, the latter is believed to be introduced during the past few decades. Both are known to be excellent hosts of Schistosoma mansoni, in Egypt. SDS-PAGE was used to separate...
متن کاملDefense response of susceptible and resistant Biomphalaria alexandrina snails against Schistosoma mansoni infection.
In Egypt, Biomphalaria alexandrina is the intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni. The fates of Schistosoma miracidia in the snails varies between different species of Biomphalaria. The internal defense system is one of the factors that influence the susceptibility pattern of the snails. The interaction between Biomphalaria snails and S. mansoni needs to be identified for each species, and ev...
